When you start to think of yoga what comes to mind? I know that in my mind I automatically think that I will be bending and twisting in random poses and having great flexibility. Also thinking of all the “mindful” meditation that you need to have scared me a little. That is when I went to a class to embrace my inner yogi and try it out !
Funny thing was that all that stigma about having to be super flexible was put to ease. I can’t tell you how many people tell me they can’t do yoga because they are not flexible, so they don’t try it. I want to tell you why you CAN and should start to get into a yoga class !
Yoga is FOR you and what you need ! You can modify any pose to make it easier and the best part is you listen to your body ! You can’t expect your body to magically fold in half if you have never tried to touch your toes before. It takes time and practice just like everything else to get your body in the positions that it needs to be in. Learning to just allow your body to sink into the poses is the best way that you can start in your yoga journey. You don’t need to be really flexible BUT you do need to be willing to try!
If you are intimidated here are a few quick tips
- Start practicing! Don’t make excuses.
- Pick one yoga pose and work on it.
- Got tight hamstrings? Forward fold every day is your friend.
- If you’re short on time, practice for 5-10 minutes per day.
- Don’t dismiss breathing and meditation. It’s time for you to calm your mind.
- Find a class and teacher that you sync with. Yoga is about being comfortable and calm.
And if your still worried about the “advanced” poses, I promise you will not walk into a yoga class and be asked to stand on your head! You do not need to be flexible. You will be able to use modifications. And MOST important, you do not need to be good at yoga or know what you are doing.. YOU WILL LEARN !
Don’t dismiss the yoga idea until you really gave it a shot and tried it out a few times. You will be surprised where your body and mind take you in a one hour class. You might just discover a part of you that you never thought you had. You will find peace and find a place of harmony that will allow you to have a calm mind and balance your soul!
